1986 Addition

1986 Addition

The Gallery opened the doors to its third addition on May 2, 1987. Designed by Rochester architect Frank Grosso of the firm Handler-Grosso, the award-winning expansion added the 12,000-square-foot Vanden Brul Pavilion connecting the Gallery to Cutler Union and returned the Gallery’s main entrance to University Avenue. Cutler Union was renovated for the Gallery’s use, the Gallery Store was expanded and for the first time MAG had a restaurant.

Handler-Grosso won the 1987 Design Award of the Rochester Chapter of the American Institute of Architects for the Vanden Brul Pavilion, which provided a wonderful space that at once served as a gathering spot, a sculpture court, and which honored the collegiate Gothic architecture of Cutler Union.
